Advocacy Alert: Today Is National OMB Call-In Day.

One of SWAN's core missions is helping nonprofit organizations stay informed, connected, and engaged in the public policy decisions that affect our work. Advocacy is not an optional part of nonprofit leadership. It is one of the ways we protect our missions and the communities we serve.

That's why we're encouraging every Pennsylvania nonprofit to participate in National OMB Call-In Day today.

The Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO), together with the National Council of Nonprofits and nonprofit organizations across the country, is asking nonprofit leaders, board members, staff, volunteers, and supporters to contact Pennsylvania's Congressional delegation regarding the Office of Management and Budget's proposed overhaul of the Uniform Guidance, the federal regulations that govern grants and cooperative agreements.

Why This Matters

Whether your organization receives federal funding directly, receives pass-through funding from another agency, or simply partners with organizations that do, these proposed changes could affect nonprofits across virtually every sector.

According to PANO, the proposal could give federal agencies significantly broader authority over discretionary grants, including expanded authority to suspend or terminate awards, alter grant terms during a project, and apply additional policy-based considerations to funding decisions. Those changes could create uncertainty for nonprofits that rely on federal funding to provide services in their communities.

As we've said before at SWAN, advocacy isn't just about funding. It's about ensuring that nonprofit organizations have stable, transparent, and predictable systems that allow them to focus on serving people instead of navigating unnecessary administrative barriers.

How You Can Help Today

PANO has made participation simple.

Take a few minutes to:

  • Contact your members of Pennsylvania's Congressional delegation.
  • Use PANO's sample phone script if you'd rather call.
  • Use PANO's advocacy email tool, which automatically routes your message to the appropriate members of Congress after you enter your address.
  • If time is limited, focus on contacting Pennsylvania's two U.S. Senators.

It only takes a few minutes, but when hundreds of nonprofit leaders participate together, our collective voice becomes much harder to ignore.

Advocacy Is Better Together

One of the reasons SWAN exists is because individual nonprofit organizations often don't have the time or capacity to monitor every policy proposal coming out of Harrisburg or Washington. Organizations like PANO and the National Council of Nonprofits do that work every day, and we're proud to amplify their advocacy efforts when they affect Pennsylvania's nonprofit community.

Strong nonprofits don't just respond to change. They help shape it.

Monday Matters: Six Degrees of the Mon Valley

Have you ever played the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon ? It’s a simple but fascinating concept: you try to connect any actor to Kevin Bacon through a chain of shared movie roles. Actor A worked with Actor B, who worked with Actor C, and so on—until you reach Kevin Bacon. The surprising part is that you can usually make that connection in six steps or fewer. In other words, the game reminds us that people are far more connected than we might initially think—even when those connections aren’t immediately obvious. One of my favorite quotes comes from writer Aaron Sorkin: "Decisions are made by the people in the room." I've thought about those words often throughout my nonprofit journey because they remind us of a simple truth. If we want to influence the future of our communities, our organizations, or the causes we care about, we have to be willing to be in the room where those conversations are taking place. If you've followed my work for any length of time, you know that I serve a number of nonprofit organizations in different capacities.
